Harakiri

Harakiri - Criterion Collection
5 stars
The storytelling here is excellent. The flashbacks repeatedly employed in "Harakiri" reminded me of another classic samurai movie -- "Rashomon". I discovered later that the screenplays for both "Rashomon" and "Harakiri" were crafted by the same man -- Shinobu Hashimoto. His work is tell-tale, but in a good way. The quality of this production is undeniable. With an anti-authoritarian tone and gritty presentation of harakiri, samurai ritual suicide (both the concept and the brutal act itself are demonstrated onscreen) this film simmers with intensity and purpose.
